Hey Chess,

I listened to Episode 38 and was wondering just how serious you were about having folks design a new logo that you can use to put on t-shirts and whatnot. Personally I would love to have a LR shirt (although I'm more into golf shirts then tees) and a travel coffee mug for work.

so what do you think about having a contest where folks can submit a logo to you and then have a poll to select the winner?

keep up the good work

yeah i think there needs to be a new logo... something similar, obviously.... i was looking for new things that could be modified or whatever. something with a gpl or creative commons license.

if there was a linux reality hoodie id probably get it. it would have to be something other than the all white cafepress usual though. something different. maybe see if you can get the stuff on a site like this...

http://www.spreadshirt.com/

i think im going to get an amarok shirt from there.

Well, I am definitely serious about soliciting ideas and logos from folks.  I didn't really think about doing a contest or anything, but that's not a bad idea.  I'll have to mull that over.   I would like to get a new logo that I can use on swag and stuff.  That would be cool.  Maybe the community could vote and narrow the list down to the top two or three and then I could pick from those?  I'd like to be able to have the final say, somehow, just in case some rouge scoundrel votes up a design that ain't so hot... Smiley

Let me know what you all think about how it could be set up.

Hey Chess,

I was hoping you would say you were serious about getting a logo designed that you could do something with cause I've already done some work on two. Now I won't say these are the best cause I'm used to doing my graphic work in paint shop pro and I did these in The GIMP (gotta support the OSS stuff dont ya know Wink ) so they are a little rough around the edges.

I have my girlfriend working on some things as well and I gave her the basic idea you were looking for along with the hex color codes from what is currently being used.

Why not use Tux as the logo?

I don't know about Chess but to me, seems like everybody and their dog uses tux on their website as a logo or mascot. Personally I'd like to see a little originality once in a while and the current logo has that and maybe some of the folks here can come up with something better. (I know mine suck cause I'm just learning GIMP but hoping it will inspire someone to do something alot better)

just my 2 cents worth

Guys,

I believe this podcast would be, easily, the number one podcast. Bigger than TWIT and many others out there. We have great people here. So..., let's shoot high and make this the podcast that receives an award next year.

But first we need a nice logo. A logo that represent or have some meaning of what Chess is trying to convey.
I always like the World Globe because it represents, for me, that Linux and it's community is global. No bad. However,we could be much more than that. We could represent inspiration, freedom in software, alternative of choice, and the love for computer and software  without restriction. Teaching new users could be also incorporated
in the meaning, that LinuxReality represent.
I recognize I'm rambling a lot. But, please, give it some thought. When you see the Nike logo what do you think?, and
it's very plain and simple, however everyone can recognize it.

I think I know what you mean, the "less is more" idea where just because something is simple doesn't mean that it can't bring alot of thought to mind when it is seen.

I'm for simple too. But currently I'm undergoing my reflective phase as well Wink Here's a quicky. It's fairly clean and should match the colours (although the background looks a wee bit off to me). It could be simpler though. I hand drew a quick map for the globe and ended up with mostly ocean! At least nobody's country gets favouritism. Smiley

Let's see some more ideas!

PS - Inkscape is a truly wonderful thing!

If anyone wants the svg file to play with, modify and improve upon you can download it here: http://home.primus.ca/~rico.jd/storage/lrlogowork.svg.

looks really good. the orange is a little lighter than whats there now but thats really minor.

i know nothing about inkscape but if there is like a layer system like with gimp/photoshop you should post an image of just the globe. for the new post icon things on the left of the forum areas you know?

looks great though.

Wow, those are some great ideas!  I think rfquerin is close to something that I'd like to use.  I do like the simple, less-is-more look.  Something that could be scaled up for the header image and scaled down for a favicon and my forum avatar would be great, like the globe is now.  I like the offset look that the current header image has, but that's not a requirement.

I don't want to use Tux ... I love the little guy, but like Halitech said above, everyone uses Tux and I'd like to be a bit different.

Keep 'em coming!  Smiley

BTW, the next episode will be up tomorrow.

Thanks for the compliments on the image.

The best thing about Inkscape (and the svg file format) is that it is vector based. So you can scale everything up or down to whatever size you want without losing quality (theoretically). You can export a bitmap (like a .png or .jpg) at whatever size you want.  The svg  file I linked to contains all the objects as separate vector objects so you could extract just the globe, just the text, etc. all separately and at different sizes for different uses. I think Inkscape is like an open-source Adobe Illustrator. It's got a great tutorial that comes with it so if you've got any inclination for graphic design, it's well worth giving it a shot (there's a windows version too although that might not matter here Wink )

Maybe someone with a little more Inkscape expertise (I'm really a hack) and artistic skills (I'm a structural engineer not an artist!)  could come up with a better globe, or better idea overall.

It was really a 15min quicky thing. I wanted to try something with the offset globe, but it seemed to feel like I was just copying what was there - though that might not be a bad thing!
