Regarding the listener feedback about Amarok not playing Mp3s:
As far as I know, Amarok doesn't use gStreamer for playback anymore. Both Debian and Ubuntu have it configured to use Xine as the player engine backend.
If the issue is one of needing a codec, install the ffmpeg plugin for xine (in Debian/Ubuntu as root: apt-get install libxine1-ffmpeg). If that doesn't do it, try installing libmodplug0c2 as well.
If installing codec support doesn't get Mp3s to play, then it's a recent issue with the Xine packaging. Go to the .xine folder in your home directory (cd ~/.xine) and do an ls. There will be a folder in there, as well as a file or two. leave the folder alone but delete the files. Then reinstall xine (as root: apt-get install --reinstall libxine1).
If that doesn't do it, PM me or Google around. There's probably something in the Ubuntu forums that will cover the issue. I hope that helps!

i havent listened to the show yet but if amarok cant play mp3s then the engine isnt installed or isnt installed properly. i dont know how big the differences in ubuntu vs debian are but there is a debian package called amarok-xine. that will install the engine. ive forgot to install that a few times.
oh and i def want to go to ohio next year. sounds like it was a lot of fun.

I actually had the problem recently, and the fix I described is what I tried. There was a problem with Xine, but since Amarok is the one showing the error, most blame Amarok. It's definitely a Xine problem. (In the Debian world) Amarok depends on amarok-engines, which depends on amarok-xine, which depends on libxine1, so it should be difficult to get Amarok without a player engine. The packages between Ubuntu and Debian are essentially the same, but I like to cover my backside in case of exceptions to that.

Ah, thanks for the Xine correction, guys. You can tell I don't use Amarok. :-)

Here's comes an old topic and a question....
During the podcast, there was a brief mention of a device to play mp3's or something. Tried to rewind and fast forward to find it, but can't really since I am at work...
Transcripts would be great, and, sorry, no I am not volunteering.
So, uh, what was the device I think I remember being mentioned???
ALSO, what about 2008??? Hard for me to get the wife and work to agree on anything, might as well start early if I want to go. Any idea when they'll do it??

On the "trying Amarok because it's highly recommended" issue. I'd also recommend it, but I'd put more detail on it....I use it when in KDE (since it is a KDE application built with the QT tool kit), but not when in Gnome or XFCE. I prefer Rythmbox when in Gnome since it's a GTK+ application built for Gnome.
Packages do (mostly) work when used outside their native environment, but don't follow the theme settings and the occasional function may not work right. It may use more resources while in use because it has to load extra libraries.
I try (whenever possible) to use GTK+ packages in Gnome and QT packages in KDE......of course, sometimes that's not possible.
