I heard you're going to the Ohio Linux Fest, September 29th, and I thought--Hmmm. I'll have some time and money around then.  Wouldn't that be fun!

I've never been to any of these things.  I've never been to a LUG.  LOL.  Hard to believe after all this time.  But wouldn't it be a kick to go out to Columbus for the weekend and maybe even find Chess and say howdy.  I'm thinking!  I checked out the cost of the group-registration at the hotel and the flight.  Sounds doable to me.

Anyone else going to go?

I'd like to go to the Ohio Linux Fest, if it doesn't interfere with my work, but being that I, too, haven't been to anything like it before, I truly wouldn't know what I'm missing.

Is there any chance of getting the Text that Luke sent you about the booting issues. I'm having a similar problem with a Dell I tried to install Linux on, and knowing what he did would be very helpful.

Sure! Here's the meat of that email:

I have a listener tip for people that may have problems booting a particular linux installation disc, but not others. This is a very strange thing I encountered when I tried installing Slackware 11 on an old 400 MHz laptop I was just recently given to keep it from being tossed in the trash. The solution for me was to use the Slax livecd with the copy2ram argument and look at the Slackware disc's isolinux.cfg. I wrote down the parameters for booting with the bare.i kernel, but others should work depending on your setup. Next I restarted the computer, again with the Slax livecd, but any other disc that boots with isolinux should be fine. Before it loaded the kernel, I swapped out the livecd with the Slackware installation disc and entered the kernel arguments that I wrote down earlier, only changing it so the pathnames started with /isolinux ( i.e. /kernels/bare.i -> /isolinux/kernels/bare.i). After that, I pressed enter and I was right where I wanted to be: ready to start the setup program and install Slackware!

By the way: just to let others know -- yes, my slackware discs were burned correctly and "successfully" and have worked on two other computers flawlessly.

Just make sure that the path to the kernel is absolutely correct for whichever distro you are trying to install, and everything should be ok.
